A culinary workers union in Las Vegas and Caesars Entertainment reached a tentative agreement Friday. The five-year labor agreement is expected to avert the first strike of its kind in Las Vegas in 30 years.

The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 said the new deal covers about 12,000 workers at nine casino resorts on the Las Vegas Strip. Nearly all of the 25,000 employees voted to authorize a strike last week and began signing up for strike pay, financial assistance and picketing shifts. Bartenders, housekeepers, bellmen and other unionized workers have been seeking a new, five-year contract since February. The current contracts expired Thursday night.

Some casinos like the Bellagio and Stratosphere hotels could still be affected by a strike, even if the deal with Caesars sticks.
