Arizona Rep. David Schweikert accepted the resignation of his chief of staff Monday.

The Republican representative and his top staffer, Oliver Schwab, are both under a U.S. House Ethics committee investigation after reports that Schweikert's campaign paid Schwab and his consulting firm beyond the limit allowed by campaign finance laws.

Schweikert has represented northern Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Cave Creek in the U.S. House since 2010.

Schwab has worked for Schweikert in one form or another since 2010 and will now work as a U.S. Coast Guard licensed maritime captain.

“Oliver will always have my friendship and support,” Schweikert said in a statement.

He’s blamed the issues on a clerical mistake, not purposeful wrongdoing.

Longtime aid Katherina Dimenstein will now assume the role as chief of staff.
