Coconino county officials have completed most of a damage assessment following Wednesday’s rains and should have a complete cost estimate later today. Hydrologists are calling the rainfall a 1,000-year event.

Over 200 homes were affected by the storm. Only a handful suffered serious damage. Flooding was limited due to a prevention system that was installed after the Schultz Fire and flooding in 2010.

“For the last two years, we have not seen any flooding in the area due to the flood mitigation, but with a storm like this that was unprecedented the canals worked very well. Some of the canals did get stuck with some debris,” said Liz Archuleta, Coconino County supervisor.

Parts of Coconino County received nearly 6 inches of rain in an hour and 15 minutes on Wednesday.
