A variety of questions related to climate change have been posed for nearly a century, though intense controversy regarding whether it’s created by humans was sparked much more recently. 

The actual focus on climate change as something newsworthy and open for public discussion began in earnest three decades ago.

That’s the jumping-off point for Andrew Revkin, strategic adviser for environmental and science journalism at the National Geographic Society, in his piece in the July issue of National Geographic magazine.
