Record-breaking heat has Arizona utilities working to keep customers cool.

On Wednesday, the temperature at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor Airport climbed above 115 degrees — breaking the previous record for that day set in 1943.

Utilities in the Phoenix valley are seeing huge demand for power.

Demand rose to its highest level all year for Arizona Public Service this week and Salt River Project saw a new record. Customers consumed more power during one evening this week than ever before.

“Temperatures are very high combined with high humidity — plus these really uncomfortable overnight lows,” said Scott Harelson, a spokesperson for SRP. “That has really increased the amount of energy consumption for our customers.”

The National Weather Service expects the temperature to cool slightly in the coming days as more moisture moves into the Valley, but it will still hover around 110 degrees.
