The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Flood Insurance Program is encouraging people living near Flagstaff that were affected by the Tinder Fire to be cautious against the threat of flash flooding.

FEMA says the Tinder Fire resulted in a loss of vegetation and charred ground that’s increased the risk of flash flooding and mudflows.

Christopher Tressler is the Coconino County Engineer. He said there aren’t many risks of flooding, but he identifies the land at the highest risk of potential flash flooding in the Blue Ridge area.

“They sit on a topographic high," Tressler said, "and there’s not a lot of contributing watershed above them. There could be some localized run-off that might cause some problems.”

FEMA recommends that residents have an evacuation plan and disaster supplies ready. They also encourage residents to move their valuables into higher levels of the home.
