The Phoenix Police Department is in record territory for officer-involved shootings just two-thirds of the way through 2018.

Police Chief Jeri Williams said her agency is working with the National Police Foundation on a study to find what is at the root of the problem.

"We're involving different members of the community, and the National Police Foundation. And, we're working along with Arizona State University," said Williams. "At the end of the study, they're going to either have some kind of town hall type of community forum, some kind of way to try to push out the information."

Until now, the highest annual count for officer-involved shootings was 31 in 2013. On Saturday, Phoenix police reported their 35th incident.

It was also the agency's 15th fatal officer involved shooting this year.
