According to Latino and Hispanic activists, late Sen. John McCain had a lot of support from the community.

Though Tommy Espinoza of Raza Development says McCain did receive criticism for an ad he ran during his 2010 senate campaign, in which McCain strolled along the U.S. - Mexico border and said he wanted to “complete the dang fence.”

But he did have their support in other efforts, like his backing of DACA and a comprehensive immigration reform bill he co-sponsored in 2005.

“So his reputation within the Latino community, the working class, was that he was there for us,” Espinoza said. “Of course people forget that he teamed up with Sen. Kennedy to push through immigration reform, of course that didn’t get through.”

Although Espinoza is a Democrat, he worked on almost all of McCain’s senate campaigns and he said the two of them respected each other.

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce president said the state and country was “blessed” by McCain’s service.

"Sen. McCain’s enduring legacy will be as immeasurable as the depth and breadth of his unflinching courage and commitment to serve a greater cause than himself,” Gonzalo A. de la Melena, Jr. wrote in a statement.

The AARP Arizona Hispanic Connection wrote on Facebook their group was mourning the loss of the senator. Other Latino and Hispanic community groups shared social media condolences after the McCain family announced he would discontinue medical treatment on Friday and again after the news of his death was announced.
