Arizona Prepares To Honor Sen. John McCain

Arizona is preparing to honor the late Sen. John McCain. Memorial services will be held at the Arizona Capitol in Phoenix on Wednesday where McCain will lie in state.  

The day of remembrance begins with a private ceremony for the late senator at 10 a.m.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and McCains’s former Senate colleague Jon Kyl will offer remarks, among others. 

Beginning at 2 p.m., members of the public will pay their respects to their former senator, who died from brain cancer this weekend.

Speaking earlier this week, McCain family spokesman Rick Davis says everyone will have a chance to pay their respects.

“I have reassurances that as long as there are people in line to file through to see John, the Capitol will remain open," said Davis.

Davis said the memorial service happens to fall on McCain’s birthday.

“The main significance of it is ... it will be on John’s 82nd birthday. Only John McCain could rig a big birthday celebration for himself like this.”

On Thursday, a public memorial service will be held at North Phoenix Baptist Church, near Central Avenue and Bethany Home Road, in Phoenix at 10 a.m.

Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald will speak during Thursday's service, preceding former Vice President Joe Biden. Former Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan and former Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Luis Gonzalez will serve as pallbearers.

McCain will be transported to Washington, D.C., following the service where he will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol on Friday.

On Saturday, a national memorial service will take place at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

McCain will be buried at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, Maryland, on Sunday.
