Residents of the Arizona border town of Naco spent the past 24 hours watching for sewage seeping into their public water supply.

Amanda Baillie with the County said it began from a pipeline leaking over the border from Naco, on Mexico's side.

Pre-evacuation orders for the area were called off late Sunday after Cochise County and State Department Environmental Health teams along with city fire crews slowed down the flow.

"They're continually monitoring and testing the water," said Baillie, who then assured, "The drinking water is safe. However, we're asking the public to avoid the area and avoid any standing water as well."

She said crews will continue to chlorinate and monitor the seepage while investigators look into what caused the leak.
