City of Glendale employees spent 12 straight days collecting over 6 million pounds of trash in August that they believe is connected to this year’s monsoon season.

Michelle Woytenko, director of field operations for the city, said they had help from water services and transport services, along with employees working through the night. Woytenko said if they had not had the extra time and help, “This would have taken us three or four months to catch up and get ahead, and this would have been unsightly with piles on the street, and once you have these piles it invites rats and mice and other vermin into it.”

The amount of trash the city collected is double the average of the last three years. The trash was disposed in the local landfill and Woytenko said there is no environmental impact.
