As the controversy over the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh continues to embroil Washington, D.C., the nation’s high court is marking a significant anniversary: 37 years ago Tuesday, Arizona’s Sandra Day O’Connor became the nation’s first female U.S. Supreme Court justice.

The 88-year-old was honored Tuesday at the law school she founded.

To mark the day and her legacy, the O’Connor Institute, the law school that bears her name at Arizona State University held a special event in her honor Tuesday evening.

O’Connor was not expected to attend because her mobility is limited. But the institute’s President Sarah Suggs says she still has an appetite for both food and knowledge.

“I had lunch with her recently and I’m pleased to report that she consumed a fair amount — even a good amount — of Mexican food which is a favorite. She was in great spirits. She wanted to be briefed on the goings-on at the Sandra Day O’Connor Institute, which we were happy to provide the justice.”

Gov. Doug Ducey declared Sept. 25 as Sandra Day O’Connor Day in Arizona.
