The city of Chandler is looking for public comment on a project along McClintock Drive and Kyrene Road. City officials are accepting input until November 5.

The city is planning to construct two new segments of bike lanes along those roads, which will connect to the existing bike lane system at Tempe's city limits.

Dan Cook is the city’s transportation policy manager and he said the goal is to make roads safer for cyclists.

“Right now, the road is too narrow to have an on-street bike lane and there’s a lot of bikers that, when they get into those areas, they’re on a very narrow street, somewhat mixing with traffic, which is not the safest thing for anybody," Cook said.

Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-to-late 2021, but if funding becomes available sooner, the project could be moved up to the summer of 2020.

“We have enough room within the right away to be able to move the curbs a little bit," Cook said. "In this case, I think it’s about a couple feet on each side so it all fits within the right away so there’s no impact on any of the homes or businesses nearby.”
