Grocery stores in Arizona may want to stock more fish and seafood. That’s the only product line where Arizona supermarkets top the national sales average.

Fish and seafood make up slightly more than 3 percent of annual grocery store sales in Arizona. That’s about one percentage point higher than the national average. The information comes from newly released census data.

Arizona is on par with the national average for beer with annual sales just over two percent. And the state's nearly tied with the national average for candy and prepackaged snacks.

But, Arizona is below average for all other product lines, with the biggest gap in the dairy aisle. Nationally, dairy products make up about 7 percent of grocery sales. In Arizona it’s less than 5 percent.

Shoppers spend the most on meat and poultry, more than $1 billion a year at Arizona supermarkets.
