In our most recent election cycles, pundits and other observers have decried the expansion of so-called tribal politics in the U.S. They’re saying that Americans are less together and less focused on a collective outlook.

Political scientist and Columbia University professor Mark Lilla argues that the focus on individuals and identity politics has contributed to electoral challenges that Democrats have faced. Lilla, the author of "The Once and Future Liberal: After Identity Politics," was at ASU’s Tempe campus this week, and The Show spoke with him about it.
