One day after Republicans chose their leaders for the upcoming state legislative session, Arizona Democrats have announced their new Senate leadership.

Democrats had hoped to take control of the state Senate for the first time in decades, but appear to have fallen short of flipping the GOP’s 17-13 advantage. David Bradley, who represents Tucson, has been selected the new leader of the Senate Democrats.

"Ours is a caucus of diverse voices, from communities across Arizona that chose us to represent their best interests at the Capitol, and I will work diligently to ensure those voices are heard,” Bradley said.

Lupe Contreras, who represents portions of the West Valley, was elected assistant leader for the Senate Democrats.
