The Justice Department announced 10 grant programs that federally recognized tribes can apply for to enhance law enforcement.

The government is suggesting the funds could be used to improve juvenile justice systems, and “service native victims of crimes such as child abuse, sexual assault and domestic violence.”

Part of the money will be devoted to addressing violence against women.

According to a 2016 report from the National Institute of Justice, more than 55 percent of American Indian and Alaska Native women experienced physical violence by an intimate partner.

The Justice Department recently funded special attorneys to prosecute crimes committed against Native American women.
