Bad air quality is hitting the Valley early this season, according to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ).

A monitor in Phoenix hit an Air Quality Index of Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups on Thanksgiving. This is the earliest occurrence since current record keeping began in 2010.

ADEQ Meteorologist Matt Pace said people should be careful about spending too much time outside, especially those with preexisting health problems.

“So if you have asthma or any sort of respiratory illnesses, that’s just going to make those symptoms a lot worse," he said. "So we do recommend that during those times when we issue high pollution advisories, when you see the particulate matter elevated to just stay indoors as much as possible.”

Pace says following ADEQ’s warnings, Maricopa County will issue “no burn” days to help reduce pollution.
