On Wednesday, the Phoenix City Council is scheduled to vote on a $230 million renovation plan for the Talking Stick Resort Arena — where the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury play basketball downtown.

For years, city leaders have been talking — mostly behind closed doors in executive session — about options to renovate the 26-year old arena or even build a new one.

And now less than a week after publicly releasing details, the council is preparing to vote.

KJZZ’s Christina Estes joined The Show to discuss the plan.

Phoenix is, of course, not the only city to be thinking about putting public money into a sports team or its arena.

And Brad Humphreys, a sports economist and a professor of economics at West Virginia University, studies whether or not that’s a good investment.

He joined The Show to talk more about this.
