When Celebrities Get Into The Education Business, Is It A Good Thing?

Maybe the best basketball player of all time, LeBron James, is getting into the education business.

This summer, he announced the opening of the I Promise School, a public school aimed at helping some of the most challenged students in Akron, Ohio.

This fall, Michelle Obama also launched the Global Girls Alliance to support girls education efforts globally. And 10 years ago, Oprah Winfrey also opened her own school — the Leader Academy for Girls in South Africa.

So what kind of effect can celebrities have in the education realm? And is it all a good thing?

David Kleeman is the senior vice president of Global Trends for digital studio Dubit and, for 25 years, he served as the president of the American Center for Children and Media. The Show spoke with him more about this phenomena.
