Politico reported recently that Navy vet and former astronaut Mark Kelly is laying the groundwork for a campaign for U.S. Senate, meeting with the new head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Kelly is the husband of former Rep. Gabby Giffords, who survived a shooting in 2011. The couple are outspoken advocates for gun control.

Congressman Ruben Gallego and former state Attorney General Grant Woods have been saying they’ll decide by Spring whether they will run.

Politico also says former Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton is considering a run for Senate. Stanton was just elected to a House seat.

The Republican incumbent will soon be Martha McSally. She was appointed to the empty seat earlier this month after Sen. Jon Kyl stepped down. The 2020 race will be a special election to finish the term of the late Sen. John McCain.
