Glendale police officers are going door-to-door reminding people not to shoot their guns into the air.

The department goes to "certain neighborhoods" before New Year's Eve and the 4th of July as "a friendly reminder" that celebratory gunfire has deadly consequences, said Officer Tiffany Ngalula in an email.

Ngalula said she doesn't have data on how widespread the practice is or how many people in the city have been injured.

The practice became a felony in 2000, after a 14-year-old Phoenix girl was killed by celebratory gunfire.

"Glendale is the only agency in the Valley with ShotSpotter technology," said Ngalula. The department uses this technology to pin-point where gunfire comes from.
