Winter storms are leaving cities in northern Sonora, Mexico, blanketed in white. For many desert dwellers, the snowy weather is a beautiful surprise. But it can also be dangerous.

Sonoran authorities are asking drivers to be extra cautious, and are warning of temporary road closures.

Tom Herrmann, a spokesman for the Arizona Department of Transportation, said the same advice goes for drivers heading south of the border as those driving in unusually snowy southern Arizona: be prepared and drive slowly

“You want to give yourself extra time, you want to drive more slowly and you want to have that emergency kit in the car,” he said.

Ideally drivers would put off trips that would require driving on snowy, icy roads, he said. But for those who can’t put off their drive, he recommends packing the car with food, water, medication and other essentials. Then, go slow and watch for ice and accidents on the road.
