The new cruise will leave Puerto Peñasco and sail through to six spots in the Sea of Cortez before returning to Rocky Point.

The governor of neighboring Sonora, Mexico, announced Monday that the first cruise ship will set sail from Rocky Point at the end of the year.

The British cruise line Cruise & Maritime Voyages is launching six 11-day cruises out of Rocky Point starting Dec. 7.

The cruises will sail the Sea of Cortez, stopping at six ports including Mazatlán, Cabo San Lucas and Santa Rosalía before returning to Puerto Peñasco, known as Rocky Point.

“It is very important for us in Sonora and Puerto Peñasco. It is the first time a cruise ship departs from Puerto Peñasco. In a way we are making history with this,” said Héctor Platt Mazón, assistant coordinator for the Sonoran tourism commission.

He said the Sonoran government hopes this will be the first step toward offering cruises from the port in Rocky Point year-round.

“We are super excited, of course, to be a part of this, and we plan to do whatever is necessary to make this cruise ship stay here and not only make a seasonal thing out of it, but to have them here all year,” he said.

In addition to visitors from Mexico and Arizona, Platt said he hopes Phoenix Sky Harbor airport will open up the cruises to travelers from all over the world.
