President Trump on Saturday proposed to restart the government by offering an extension of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, in exchange for $5.7 billion in border wall funding.

But Arizona political analyst Jim Heath said Trump’s offer did not move the ball forward to bring the partial government shutdown to an end.

“It was a reiteration of his Oval Office speech from last week," said Heath. "He’s actually taken off the table a path to citizenship, which is something he seemed more agreeable to a year ago, so it’s not even included as part of his compromise, and I think it’s a non-starter.”

Democratic leaders balked at the proposal.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, said he’ll introduce Trump’s proposal in the Senate this week.
