A study in the journal BMJ reports that Brexit could help cause thousands more cardiovascular disease deaths in the United Kingdom by 2030.

As prices rise under trade tariffs and other levies, U.K. residents may eat fewer fruits and vegetables, thereby raising their risks of heart attacks and strokes.

The study projected that a trade agreement would convert to around 4,000 such deaths; under a worst-case "no deal" Brexit, that number tripled.

The World Health Organization recommends adults consume at least five portions of fruits and vegetables daily. In 2017, the U.K. imported 84 percent of its fruits and 43 percent of its vegetables from European Union and non-EU sources.
