Starting Friday the Glendale Police are enforcing the city’s new distracted driving ordinance.

For six months the department will issue warnings. Then offenders will get a $250 fine for sending a text message or talking on the phone.

“Whether you're putting it on bluetooth, whether you're using it through the car on speaker phone — either way — our attempts and our purpose on their ordinance is to keep people’s eyes on the roadway and off their electronic devices,” said Sergeant John Roth.

Glendale’s ban was approved last year  and there are currently a number of bills at the Arizona legislature that would stiffen penalties for distracted driving across the entire state.
