GOP voucher supporters want to strip away one of the key duties of the new State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Republican State Sen. David Livingston has admitted that the Empowerment Scholarship Account — better known as the state voucher program — was poorly managed under the care of then Republican Superintendent Diane Douglas.

If approved, Senate Bill 1320 would strip oversight from newly elected Democratic State Superintendent Kathy Hoffman and allow fellow Republican and State Treasurer Kimberly Yee to choose an outside agency to monitor the voucher program.

Education advocates told The Arizona Capitol times the bill is a mistake, taking an education program out of the hands of experts and ignoring voter intent from 2018 to limit voucher expansion.
