When you buy tortillas at your local grocery, you may not be getting what you pay for. The Arizona Department of Weights and Measures says nearly 20 percent of the locations inspected failed because of short-weight violations or packages containing fewer tortillas than advertised.  Shawn Marquez is the department’s compliance director.

“One, they were short weight,” Marquez said. “Others were short weight because there were tortillas actually missing. So if they were advertising a dozen, some of them only had 8 of them in there, thus making it short weight. “

Marquez says nearly 8,500 packages of tortillas were audited earlier this month. He says the rule for packaged goods is they need to meet or exceed stated weights and have the stated number inside.
