The Arizona Youth Employment Bill Polls Poorly
Arizona House Bill 2535 would lower the state’s $11 per hour minimum wage to the federal minimum of $7.25 for full-time students under the age of 22 who are working part time.
But a new poll conducted by Washington D.C. firm Lake Research Partners showed that 50 percent of voters in highly Republican districts such as Glendale, Mesa and North Phoenix would be less likely to re-elect senators who support the bill.
Joshua Ulibarri, spokesperson for the firm, said, “we asked quite simply: is it fair or unfair to pay student workers less for doing the same work as people older than them who are not students? They said overwhelmingly it is unfair. They said, ‘I want my state senator to vote no, don’t do this.”
The measure has cleared the House and will be heard in an Arizona Senate committee on Thursday.
