Sonoran Bass Tournament Big Draw For US Anglers
When it comes to fishing in Sonora, the Sea of Cortez is likely what comes to mind first. However, the state is also home to a number of prime bass fishing spots. One of those — the Novillo Reservoir — is hosting the 10th annual spring tournament this weekend. Up to 200 anglers are expected.
“Roughly 40 percent of participants are foreigners,” said Luis Manuel Robles Briseño, fisheries director for the state agriculture department. Most are from the United States.
The host city San Pedro de la Cueva in rural central Sonora enjoys a substantial economic benefit from the tournament. The town also is also home to a sizable expatriate community of fishing enthusiasts.
The current record bass caught in a tournament organized by the local Novillo Bass Club weighed in at 8.5 pounds, according to the group’s website.
