One of Mexico's most wanted drug cartel bosses is in the custody of Mexican federal police and faces extradition to the United States.

Jose Antonio Acosta Hernandez is wanted in the U.S. for the murder of two American citizens last year in the Mexican border city of Juarez.

One worked for the U.S. consulate in Juarez, while the other was a sheriff's deputy in neighboring El Paso, Texas.

Mexican authorities said Acosta Hernandez is a high ranking member of the Juarez drug cartel. They said he confessed to ordering the murder of 1,500 people in the violent border region, including the killings of police officers and government officials.

Federal police arrested Acosta Hernandez Friday in the northern city of Chihuahua. On Sunday, he was brought before reporters in Mexico City. Officials credit his arrest to a collaboration with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
