For the past year, teenagers ready to take their driving permit exam could do so from home, under parental or guardian supervision. Since the program's start, 83,000 at-home tests have been taken so far.

“It benefits all of our customers by reducing the number of people that need to come to an office, so that means we can serve people a little more quickly at our physical locations when we do have people come in,” said Doug Nick, a spokesperson at the Motor Vehicle Division.

Following the success of the "Permit Test at Home" program, Nick said other services have also moved online to reduce wait times at MVD locations.

According to the department, another advantage of the the program is that while parents and guardians proctor the teenager, they get to brush up on the road rules too.

“It’s also an opportunity for the parents to kind of get a refresher course as well, so it has that added benefit," he said. "Law enforcement and so forth have said that they like the potential aspect of that.”

The pass rate of people who take the test at home is also 12 percent higher than taking it at a location.

Teenagers between the age of 15 years and six months and 18 years are eligible to take the permit test at home.
