Now two years into the self-driving car program, Waymo is opening a second service facility in Mesa that is expected to create hundreds of jobs.

Waymo spokeswoman Alexis Georgeson says Mesa was an easy choice for the new Technical Service Center.

“Mesa has been an incredible partner in those years, and we already have our location down in Chandler, so when you look at our service map it naturally was a great fit.”

Mesa Mayor John Giles says he expects the company to bring innovation and ... "a large facility that’s going to have a lot of high quality jobs in our community.”

The service facility is expected to open later this year. Waymo brought its autonomous vehicles to Chandler in 2016.

Tuesday’s announcement comes a year after a self-driving Uber vehicle struck and killed a Tempe pedestrian and later halted its program in Arizona.
