After Santiago Barroso's murder, reporters protested in Hermosillo demanding accountability in the case. The sign in the middle reads, "We demand strong action from all three levels of government."

Authorities have arrested a suspect in the murder of San Luis Rio Colorado reporter Santiago Barroso. Without going into detail, they are also saying that the motive had to do with personal relationships, not Barroso’s work as a radio host and columnist.

The murder was not “an attack on free expression,” State Attorney General Claudia Indira Contreras said at a Friday press conference in San Luis. That possibility was initially investigated.

An assistant state attorney previously said that was the probable motive, given Barroso’s regular reporting about smuggling and other criminal activities.

The state attorney also concluded that last month’s killing of one reporter and wounding of another was a case of mistaken identity.
