A new military general is in charge in the border city of Tijuana. Gilberto Laderos Briseño is replacing the general many credit with helping rescue the city from drug violence.

Laderos comes to the northern border city from a military post in Mexico's southernmost state of Chiapas. He's no stranger to Tijuana.

Laderos commanded the military's special forces in the city in 2008. That was the most violent year ever in Tijuana as drug gangs fought a brutal turf war.

The general he's replacing, Alfonso Duarte, is broadly credited with helping to defuse drug violence.

Authorities on both sides of the border have called Duarte's coordination with police in Tijuana a model that other Mexican cities should follow. Duarte has been promoted to oversee all of northwestern Mexico.

Tijuana's new general, Laderos, has promised continuity. He says things will continue to be managed as they were.
