Arizona Gov. Ducey Says He Won't Call State Emergency Over Border
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said Congress is at fault for an influx of migrants coming into the state at its border with Mexico.
Speaking on PBS’ “Arizona Horizon,” he said he would not consider declaring a state emergency about the border, after Yuma Mayor Douglas Nicholls made an emergency declaration in the border city last week.
“Typically you declare a state emergency when there’s a natural disaster," Ducey said. "Well, this is not a natural disaster. This is a congressional disaster, and Congress needs to act.”
Ducey said he is supportive of the President Donald Trump’s decisions on public safety on the border. But he said because of its economic impact on the state, he would not support closing the border, which Trump threatened to do earlier this month.
