Early voting starts Wednesday in the runoff elections for Phoenix City Council. Residents of two districts are voting.

District 5 covers parts of West Phoenix and is currently represented by Vania Guevara. She’s running against Betty Guardado, a vice president with the hospitality workers union Unite Here Local 11. This is the district held by former Councilman Daniel Valenzuela.

District 8 covers downtown and parts of south and east Phoenix. Candidates there are Carlos Garcia, director of the activist group Puente, and Michael Johnson, a former councilmember. Kate Gallego held this district until she resigned to run for mayor, a race she ultimately won.

Mail-in ballots go out Wednesday to people on the Permanent Early Voting List and people who have requested an early ballot. Those ballots can be mailed back or dropped off at early voting locations.

Also starting Wednesday, Phoenix City Hall will be open during regular business hours for in-person early voting.

Election Day is May 21. More information on when and where to vote in the runoff can be found at phoenix.gov/cityclerk/services/election-information/May-2019-runoff-election.
