A 21-year-old man from India has become the fifth person to die while detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement since Oct. 1, 2018.

Simratpal Singh, 21, was in the La Paz County jail on charges of assault and sexual assault, ICE said in a news release.

Singh posted bond and was transferred to ICE custody, but he remained at the La Paz County jail to wait until agents could take him to an ICE facility.

Last Thursday, jail officials found Singh not breathing and unresponsive. He was taken to a hospital in Parker, then airlifted to another hospital in Goodyear, where he was pronounced dead early Friday morning.

The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the criminal case against Singh, but a report has yet not been completed.

ICE officials said an autopsy is pending to figure out why Singh died.
