One of the Navajo Generating Station's three 750-megawatt generators.

Monday is the last day of public input before the Environmental Protection Agency decides the fate of the west’s largest coal-fired power plant.

The EPA will decide whether the Navajo Generating Station should cut nitrogen oxide emissions in five years, or give plant operators more time to install pollution-cutting technology.

The Salt River Project utility company estimates the changes will cost a half billion dollars.

Environmentalists say the emissions obscure views at several national parks, including the Grand Canyon.

The Navajo Generating Station supplies electricity to Arizona, California and Nevada.

The public can make comments by mail, email or through an electronic docket form.
