Arizonans as young as 18 will still be able to smoke or vape, at least for the time being.

A bill that would have raised the minimum age to purchase tobacco and vaping products to 21 did not have the support to pass before the legislative session closed.

The main objective with the bill was to preempt cities and counties from enacting their own laws on nicotine products.

"I think that having a uniform commercial code for smoking and vaping is good not only for the public but also for people trying to sell items or produce them," said Republican State Rep. John Allen.

He said he gave up the fight because he didn't have enough votes to pass it.

Another bill that circulated the Capitol would have regulated vaping products like tobacco, but leave the minimum age for purchase at 18. It would have also allowed cities and counties to enact stricter controls on vaping products.

That bill died as the Legislature adjourned in the early hours on Tuesday.
