The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed the DREAM Act by a margin of 50 votes.

The legislation creates a pathway to citizenship for children who were brought to the country when their parents entered illegally.

Arizona Democrat Greg Stanton voted for the legislation. He said it will stimulate the economy.

“The economic gains in communities across the country will be significant and fewer stand to benefit more than my community. The Phoenix metro area ranks among the top areas that will experience real economic benefit from the passage of this bill," Stanton said. 

Arizona Republican Andy Biggs voted against the bill because he said it will increase the immigrant population in the United States.

“You’re going to see more people come because you’ve got the incentives in place. And they’re not just coming from Mexico or the Northern Triangle. They’re coming from Venezuela. They’re coming from Cuba. They’re coming from Africa. They’re coming from China. They’re coming from all over the world today," Biggs said. 

The bill passed on a mostly party-line vote, with 237 Democrats supporting the legislation and 187 Republicans rejecting it.
