How Arizona's Wet Winter Could Be Fueling Wildfires

Two wildfires were sparked late last week near the Phoenix metro area. The Mountain Fire in the Tonto National Forest began on Friday near Horseshoe and Bartlett Lakes, and the Woodbury Fire started Saturday near the Woodbury Trailhead in the Superstition Mountains.
By Saturday, the Mountain Fire had consumed over 7,000 acres — but it has gone down since. Investigators said it is human-caused and are looking for details. So far, that fire is about 50 percent contained.
The Woodbury Fire has burned some 5,000 acres so far and remains uncontained.
Dolores Garcia with the Bureau of Land Management is covering the Mountain Fire, and she said the wetter winter has caused an explosion of vegetation that can easily turn into fire fuel.
