The Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS was recently awarded a contract from the Maricopa County Department of Public Health to conduct a statewide assessment of LGBTQ health needs and patterns.

An online survey, which will be available this week, during National LGBT Health Awareness Week, will help the Center find out what needs to be addressed.

Lisa Fontes, the development director at the Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS, said there has not been a comprehensive assessment done at the state level.

"We are really excited to be a part of this initiative that is going to give us a really good picture of what LGBT health is," Fontes said.

She said the survey will influence the policies made in relation to LGBTQ health in the future. Among the topics the Southwest Center plans to study is the treatment by medical providers toward community members.
