President Donald Trump signaled to the world last week that the United States would prematurely withdraw from Syria. Arizona Sen. John McCain released a statement April 8 after the chemical attack on the Syrian people.

Initial accounts show dozens of civilians, including children, were targeted by a chemical attack in Syria.

"President Trump inherited bad options after years of inaction by his predecessor in Syria," McCain said in a statement. "History will render bitter judgement on America for that failure. But no one should believe we are out of options. We can and should change course."

McCain added that the change starts with a comprehensive strategy that lays out clear objectives for the United States’ mission in Syria.
