In an effort to stem homelessness in Phoenix, state and county officials are directing funds into permanent housing solutions instead of temporary overflow shelters.

The shelter, on the Human Services Campus at 11th Avenue and Jackson Street, has been run by St. Vincent de Paul since 2016 and has offered sleeping space on the campus’ floor.

Jessica Berg is the chief program officer at St. Vincent de Paul. She said it is working to help get about 240 homeless people into permanent housing solutions by the end of the summer.

“That may include permanent housing, rapid rehousing, other shelters with more specific case management or navigation services, family reunification, really a whole range of options,” Berg said. 

She added that the shelter will provide emergency heat relief throughout the summer, but will be phased out by the end of September, when funding runs out.
