The Phoenix City Council unanimously voted Tuesday to take steps to promote equal pay among men and women. The city will be updating laws, recruiting more women and offering training programs.

Phoenix will focus on getting more women to apply for non-traditional jobs, such as police and fire. The city will also add language from the federal Equal Pay Act of 1963 to its human relations ordinance and city code.

“The goal of these changes was to highlight the issues specific to the gender gap and to clarify to our employers what we mean," said Phoenix Assistant City Attorney Heidi Gilbert. "It currently is a criminal complaint. It is complaint driven so someone would have to come forward.”

Gilbert said the city will work with businesses to mediate the issue, but if that fails criminal charges could be brought. That allows the city to put the employer on probation and monitor them. The maximum fine is $2,500 per count.
