Last year, Bisbee became the first city in Arizona to ban plastic bags. Now, Arizona has become the first state in the country to ban plastic bag bans.

The bags aren’t going to suddenly reappear in the small, former mining community. But local officials are still figuring out whether they’ll fight the state to keep the ban - or if they’ll need to. Bisbee is governed by a charter, which gives it more autonomy than typical Arizona cities.

Gene Conners is a city councilman who voted for the ban last year. He said it’s made a difference around town.

"It’s not pristine, but it’s pretty close," he said. "It’s such a treat not seeing all those plastic bags in trees and in cacti and things."

Not everyone in Bisbee supports the bag ban. Last year, opponents circulated a petition against the ban, but failed to get anything on the ballot. Last month, the city council voted the keep it.
