Law enforcement officers across the state have made more than 3,000 arrests for impaired driving since Thanksgiving. Alberto Gutier of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety says the DUI patrols are trained to detect those impaired by either drugs or alcohol.

“We have a lot of officers who are trained as drug recognition experts and when we make these traffic stops they recognize the symptoms of impairment and that’s what happens,” Gutier said.

He says he’s concerned about the number of people being stopped on DUI-drug charges, which he says is on the increase.
