The town of Paradise Valley is holding their first public discussions about banning drones in town limits.

Mayor Michael Collins said his office has received multiple complaints about the use of drones in Paradise Valley neighborhoods.

“We are starting to see much more exposure of these systems to our residents. And quite frankly, most of the time we are getting adverse reaction from residents who are in the back yard and in their house and think that they have an expectation of privacy,” Collins said.

Collins said he understands that there are multiple non-malicious uses of  drones and he looks forward to meeting to discuss the best way to deal with them.  

Banning drones is not the main intention, Collins said. The council will also be discussing several options including requiring permits to fly drones in the town.

“But what that permit does, it that it requires that they get the permission of the property owner in which they intend to fly over. Now, whether or not our permit conditions require them to notify the adjacent neighbors and what proximity and some of those other detail, we don’t know. We’re really just at the beginning of the conversation of this policy,” Collins said.

He said as the Paradise Valley Town Council continues their discussions on the topic, resident privacy concerns will always remain a factor.
